Periodontology

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry devoted to the health of the periodontal tissues – the gums, the bone and the ligaments that support the teeth. Healthy gums are the foundation of a beautiful and lastingly stable smile, so periodontal health matters not only for aesthetics but for keeping your own teeth throughout life.

At Stomatoestetika Ovsenik we give periodontology particular attention, believing that a healthy smile is always a balance of aesthetics, function and healthy supporting tissues. With modern diagnostic methods and minimally invasive approaches we detect gum disease and treat it promptly and effectively.

We recommend periodontal treatment at the first signs of gum inflammation or of loss of the tissues supporting the teeth. The most common signs are bleeding gums when brushing, swelling, bad breath, receding gums, sensitive teeth or loose teeth.

Many patients also come because of aesthetic concerns, such as teeth that look too long due to gum recession, or an uneven gum line. Early detection lets us stop the disease from progressing and keep natural teeth for many more years.

Treatment is always tailored to the individual patient. We begin with a detailed examination of the gums and periodontal tissues, including the measurement of periodontal pockets. Probing depth tells us far more than “how deep the gum is” – it helps us assess inflammation, loss of tooth support, prognosis and the need for treatment.

The foundation of treatment is the thorough removal of bacterial deposits and tartar, since bacteria are the principal cause of periodontal disease. Education in proper oral hygiene is another key part of therapy – only regular maintenance preserves the results in the long run.

Scaling and root planing form the basis of treatment for advanced gum inflammation, or periodontal disease. We turn to this procedure when deeper periodontal pockets have formed and tartar and bacterial deposits sit below the gum line, where ordinary cleaning can no longer remove them effectively.

The goal is to clear the bacteria and hard deposits from the root surfaces and create the conditions for the gum to reattach snugly to the tooth. This reduces inflammation and bleeding and slows the further loss of the supporting bone.

The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and is normally painless. Mild sensitivity of the teeth or gums may follow, but it usually settles quickly.

When tissue loss is more pronounced or the pockets are too deep, non-surgical treatment alone is not enough. We then move on to further procedures, among them flap surgery.

In flap surgery the gum is temporarily lifted so that the deeper root surfaces can be cleaned precisely and the inflamed tissue and bacterial deposits, otherwise out of reach, removed. In selected cases the procedure can be combined with regenerative techniques that encourage the rebuilding of lost bone and periodontal tissue.

The aim of surgical treatment is not merely to halt the disease but to keep the teeth for the long term, improve the stability of the periodontal tissues and make daily oral hygiene easier for the patient.

Periodontal procedures today are far gentler than they once were. Most are carried out delicately and under local anaesthesia, so treatment is normally painless. Mild gum sensitivity may follow, but it fades quickly.

We want you to feel relaxed and safe throughout, so we explain every step carefully and adapt the treatment to you.

The success of periodontal treatment is closely tied to regular oral hygiene and check-ups. Even after therapy has been completed successfully, regular dental visits and professional cleaning remain important – they are the only way to keep the disease from returning.

Healthy gums matter for more than a beautiful smile; they affect the health of the whole body. Long-standing gum inflammation has been linked to several systemic diseases, making periodontal care part of caring for your overall health.
