Tartar removal

Tartar removal is the professional cleaning of hard and soft deposits from the surfaces of the teeth. Tartar forms when soft bacterial deposits mineralise, at which point ordinary brushing can no longer remove them.

We perform it with ultrasonic instruments, hand instruments and, where needed, polishing of the tooth surfaces.

Removal of bacterial deposits. Tartar is rough, giving bacteria an ideal surface to settle on. These bacteria cause gum inflammation, bleeding and bad breath.

Prevention of gingivitis and periodontitis. Tartar left at or below the gum line sustains chronic inflammation, which can progress into periodontal disease with loss of bone and of the support of the teeth.

Less bleeding of the gums. Once the tartar is gone, the gums settle more easily. Bleeding on brushing or probing usually decreases, especially when the patient improves their oral hygiene as well.

Easier oral hygiene. Smooth tooth surfaces are easier to clean. With the hard deposits removed, a toothbrush, interdental brushes and floss all work far more effectively.

A clearer view of the teeth and gums. With the deposits gone, we can assess the enamel, the fillings, the gums and any caries or periodontal pockets far better.

The key point: tartar removal is not just a cosmetic procedure but an important preventive and therapeutic measure for the health of the gums and periodontal tissues.
